The history of Adarsha Secondary School is closely connected with the history, educational development and community life of Thimi.
Historical Background
During the study of the history of the word “Thimi,” the stone inscription discovered in Devpatan plays an important role. In the course of constructing a house near the Ratneshwar Shiva Lingam located in Devpatan, an inscription engraved on stone was discovered.
The inscription, dating back to Nepal Sambat 407, mentions Dayitapalli and Themringgram. The same inscription also contains the word “Bosinggram.”
From the presence of the words Bosing and Themring, it can be understood that the word Bosing refers to the present-day Bode, while Themring refers to Thimi. Thus, the city known as Themringgram during the Licchavi period appears to have gradually come to be called Thimi. This fact has also been mentioned in the book Historical Thimi.
“Themringgram” is understood to be an early historical reference to present-day Thimi.
The identity of the school and the community have developed together across generations.
From a coaching class
to Grade 12 education.
Thimi Coaching Class
Under the leadership of education enthusiast Baikuntha Hari Shrestha and with the active participation of local educated and socially aware youths, the school was temporarily approved under the name “Thimi Coaching Class.”
Adarsha High School
The institution received permanent approval under the name Adarsha High School (Secondary).
Adarsha Secondary School
When the National Education System Plan was implemented in the district, Janapremi Primary School was merged into this institution. The school was approved as Adarsha Secondary School, offering education from Grade 1 to Grade 10.
Education through Grade 12
After 45 years of establishment, the school was upgraded in response to changing circumstances and the objective of improving educational standards.
From B.S. 2066, Adarsha Secondary School became affiliated with the then Higher Secondary Education Council in the Education, Humanities and Management streams and began operating classes up to Grade 12.
Built through local effort and shared responsibility.
Educational awareness in the Thimi area began developing after B.S. 2007, alongside wider educational awareness across Nepal.
Although efforts were made at the local level, the initial attempts do not appear to have been very successful due to a lack of knowledge about how to establish and develop schools.
In B.S. 2007, a school named Bal Premi School was established at the lower-secondary level, but it could not operate for a long period.
Later, around Magh 2021/22 B.S., a group of educated and socially aware youths under the leadership of Baikuntha Hari Shrestha started teaching voluntarily at Siddhikali's Sattal in Chapacho under the name Virendra High School.
However, because of the unfavorable conditions of the location, after about two months the school changed its name to “Thimi Praudh Coaching Class” and was shifted to its present location, which is now known as Adarsha Secondary School, Layaku.
Residents, students and supporters helped build the school together.
For the sustainability of the school, local residents of the Thimi area collectively constructed a building through voluntary labor and financial contributions.
Students studying at that time also participated in collecting rice contributions from farmers' fields within Madhyapur Thimi. The then President of the Bhaktapur District Panchayat, Swadamadan Krishna Hada, also provided special support.
Later, the building was expanded and renovated, eventually reaching its present condition.

Geographical Location
Adarsha Secondary School, located at Layaku, Thimi, lies in Ward No. 4 of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality, Bhaktapur District, Bagmati Province, at a place known as Layaku (Durbar).
The school is approximately 8 km east of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and about 4 km west of Bhaktapur, the district headquarters.
The school area is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,326 meters above sea level.
Located almost in the central part of the Kathmandu Valley, the school's service area includes Katunjye, Sirutar, Balkot, Duwakot and areas of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality including Thimi, Chapacho, Nagadesh, Bode and Divoshwori.

The Hanumante River and Manohara River are located around the school area. Two ponds are also situated near the school, with Nigu Pukhu being one of the notable and historically significant places of Thimi.

Composition of the School Community
The majority of the population served by Adarsha Secondary School consists of people belonging to the Newar community.
Apart from the Newar community, smaller numbers of other ethnic groups, including Brahmin, Chhetri, Kami and Damai, also reside in the area.
Due to increasing migration and urbanization, the number and diversity of people from different ethnic communities have been increasing.
The majority of the population follows Hinduism, while there is also a significant number of people who follow Buddhism. A smaller number of people follow Christianity and other religions.
The Dalit communities in this area include Sahi, Kapali, Kuchikar, Sarki, Damai and others.
The Newar community is regarded as the indigenous community of the Kathmandu Valley. In the context of Thimi, there is a belief that the people who perform Devnali Puja at Digu Tole (Diguli) are among the indigenous inhabitants of the area.
Festivals remain an important part of everyday community life.
The customs, traditions, lifestyles, cultures and languages of the ethnic and religious communities of Thimi are diverse, rich, historically significant and important parts of the social and cultural identity of the area.
